Natural Remedies for Menstrual Problems

I may receive a commission if you purchase something mentioned in this post. See more details here.

Do you suffer from moods swings and discomfort every month around that time?

Well, I have news for you:

Menstrual problems are NOT normal!

When I was in high school, I had irregular, heavy periods, with bad cramps. I went on the pill, but I still suffered fwith cramps and the pill was only masking the issue. Menstrual problems are caused by a hormonal imbalance that you can learn more about in the incredibly informative book Quit PMS. Eating clean, getting healthy, and staying healthy are the most important factors in balancing hormones. It is only with a healthy lifestyle and balanced hormones that a woman truly has hope of relief from menstrual problems.

When menstrual symptoms do occur, though, what do you do? Reach for the pain pills? How about a more natural remedy? Here are some of my favorite things to use:

Heat. This is my favorite solution for soothing my poor uterus. Whether it is a microwaved rice heating pad on my abdomen or a bath, heat relaxes me right away for instant relief. Add epsom salts and a few drops of lavender or clary sage essential oil, diluted in a carrier, to a bath for extra relaxation and relief. I also love drinking tea and eating soup when I’m feeling under the weather due to my period.

Get moving. Do whatever exercise feels good for you. This could be walking, yoga, or even running. Just don’t push yourself too hard. This exercise is meant to release endorphins and get your blood moving to relieve the discomfort and help get your energy up. I also find that just doing something takes my mind off things and then the pain don’t bother me as much.

Monthly Blend. I live for this essential oil blend, specially designed to help women during their periods. It comes in a roller bottle, which allows you to simply roll the oil on your abdomen. No mess and great to put in your purse! It’s amazing how quickly this blend soothes any discomfort I am feeling during my period! You will want to dilute it by rubbing fractionated coconut oil on your abdomen first or getting a second roller bottle to dilute the blend and bring it on the go. I’m a busy student, and I rarely have the option to take a bath, sit with a heat pad, or get moving on those first couple days of my period. The Monthly Blend is my first line of defense and I love how well it works! You can learn more about essential oils here.

And best part? In my personal experience, I only have to apply it once or twice a day! The relief is not only temporary. While this may vary for each woman, it is the factor that makes this my favorite method for relieving menstrual symptoms.

I personally love all of these options for soothing during my period. I actually find they all work faster than pain pills or any other drugs meant to help with menstrual symptoms. So why wouldn’t you try a more natural way?

P.S. I have also found that using cloth pads and a menstrual cup goes a long way towards making my periods easier to deal with, which can be a huge factor in feeling better.

What are your favorite remedies for your menstrual woes?

My tried and true remedy is to eat a Dill Pickle, take a nap (hour or 2), and I’m good for the rest of the week! The pickle is key, though I don’t know why yet. I used to be in pain for days, but this works for me.
